Extension applications can be submitted to request an extension of CHIA examination study period (90 Days) or CHIA recertification period (3 Years). These include unforeseen and extenuating circumstances such as:
- Changes to your parental or carer responsibilities
- Unforeseen or extended illness (medical certificate required)
- Loss of immediate family member
- Impact to your work requirements as a direct result of COVID-19
Extension requests will be deidentified by CHIA program staff and provided for review by the CHIA Examination Committee (EC). The duration of the extension will be limited and based upon time since registration or certification, and the nature of unforeseen and extenuating circumstances.
There are some differences in this process for those enrolled in the CHIA examination vs CHIA alumni applying for recertification as outlined below:
Examination study period
You may wish to apply for an extension to your study period if your ability to complete the examination in the allocated 90 days is negatively impacted by unforeseen and extenuating circumstances.
Completed extension requests require you to provide; your preferred extension duration, a statement of your circumstances, how you plan to use the additional time to study, and any documentation to support your reason for extension.
There are some reasons for extension requests which will not be granted. These are similar, but not limited to the following:
- Changes in work commitments
- Unexpected travel commitments
- Annual leave
- Moving homes
COVID-19 Extension Requests
If your capacity to study has been negatively impacted by COVID-19, you can request an extension of either 1 month, 2 months or 3 months to your study period by, providing a statement on how the health crisis is impacting or has impacted you.
Extension requests will not be considered after the end date has passed, and need to be submitted 14 days in advance of your end date.
CHIA recertification period
You may wish to apply for an extension to your recertification period where you are unable to obtain the 60 CPD points within the recertification period (every three years); with a minimum of 50% of the qualifying CPD points earned through relevant Australasian Institute of Digital Health (AIDH) or Health Information Management Association of Australia (HIMAA) activities.
Completed extension requests require you to provide; your preferred extension duration, a statement of your circumstances, how you plan to obtain the CPD points, and supporting documentation:
- A copy of your CPD Journal, with the points you have accumulated to date,
- Other supporting documentation (such as medical certificate, doctors note or approved parental leave)
