The CHIA Examination is set on a rescaled pass mark* between 50-65% and is reviewed twice a year by our CHIA Examination Committee. The pass mark for your examination is 55%.

Navigating This Portal
On the left hand side you will see the portal menu. The menu will take you to the following sections:
Handbook provides information about the CHIA examination.
Study Guide provides a list of reading resources that address each tested competency and a sample study plan to provide an idea on how to organise your study time over the 90-day period. Please note – the Study Guide is regularly updated, be sure to cross check that you have the latest edition from this portal.
Demonstration Examination to get you familiar with the layout of the software.
Examination to take when you are ready (within your allocated 90 days as advised in your welcome email).
Please make sure to download the Handbook and the Study Guide since it won’t be accessible once your examination expires.
Important Notes
You will notice that opening this portal has partially filled the completion bar in your dashboard. This has not started an examination attempt. Starting an attempt is clearly marked and it only happens when you click on the Begin button.
Optional Resources
As an alternative to the provided Study Guide, you can choose to purchase A Practitioner’s Guide to Health Informatics in Australia, authored by David Rowlands, is a comprehensive body of knowledge (600+ pages) providing an understanding of the 53 competencies in the Australian Health Informatics Competency Framework (AHICF) tested in the CHIA examination. The Practitioner’s Guide to Health Informatics in Australia is independently authored and acts as a companion guide to the CHIA program but is not a reflection of the CHIA examination.

* Rescaling is a process used in education to adjust exam scores so that results are fair and accurately reflect how well different cohorts of candidates perform. By adjusting the passing mark, rescaling ensures that students meet the same academic standards, even if exams differ slightly from year to year. It helps guarantee that a candidate’s performance level is consistent, no matter which questions they received. This adjustment is done twice a year by reviewing the difficulty of each question given over the previous six months.
