We asked the CHIA Examination Committee to recommend a recent publication/resource that is relevant to a CHIA. This issue they recommended PLOS Digital Health.
PLOS Digital Health is an interdisciplinary, open access journal publishing digital health research on a wide range of topics but with a focus on social and ethical issues as well as the wider public health context.
Narrowing in on in on competency F13 – Digital Divide, the committee recommends the following article from PLOS Digital Health:
PLOS Digital Health 2023, ‘Digital determinants of health – PLOS digital health’, PLOS Blogs, web log post, 12 October, Available here
The digital determinants of health is a set of reviews covering the digital determinants of health and highlighting potential pitfalls to access and equality in technology-enabled healthcare. The five different articles address a scoping review of digital literacy being a new determinant of health, the role of bias from digital determinants of health in technologies, strategies and solutions to address digital determinants of health across underinvested communities, how health data poverty amplifies existing health disparities, and bias in artificial intelligence algorithms.
As the PLOS Digital Health Editor-in-Chief states, ‘The promise of digitalization is data and knowledge to improve quality of life. But just like previous innovations, it will deliver its promise to those who are already privileged’.
