We asked the CHIA Examination Committee to recommend a recent publication/resource that is relevant to a CHIA. They recommended: Electronic prescribing systems in hospitals to improve medication safety: a multimethods research programme.
The article explores electronic prescribing (ePrescribing) systems and the researchers set out to find out how these ePrescribing systems are chosen, set up and used in English hospitals.
They found that setting up ePrescribing systems was challenging due to the need to accommodate different healthcare roles and medical conditions. However, in two out of three study sites, the introduction of ePrescribing systems correlated with a decrease in high-risk prescribing errors, likely influenced by system-generated warnings.
To support healthcare professionals in choosing, implementing, and utilising ePrescribing systems, an online ePrescribing Toolkit was developed and is gaining international recognition with support from NHS England. This toolkit serves as a valuable resource for improving medication safety and efficiency in healthcare settings.
