The article focuses on the evolving digital competencies required for health service managers in the context of healthcare transformation. The study emphasises the importance of integrating digital health competencies into the education and training of health service managers to ensure effective leadership in digitally enabled healthcare environments.
A five-step approach is suggested to guide how managers learn the digital skills they need. This includes clearly defining what skills are required, speeding up digital change in Australia’s health system (based on research), and using proven adult learning principles. It also involves matching the right skills and knowledge to the needs of the future—especially as we move into the era of the 5th Industrial Revolution.
Both formal courses and informal training should focus on making sure these skills are flexible and can be applied in different situations. Educators need to understand the rapidly changing environment health service managers are working in. The digital health community has a responsibility to support this workforce and help drive lasting, positive change in healthcare.
These recommendations aim to equip health service managers with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively navigate and lead within the increasingly digital landscape of healthcare.
